Properly apply your hair products

PROPERLY APPLY YOUR HAIR PRODUCTS

With so many different hair products and brands on the market today, you be forgiven for being confused about what is actually useful and what is just false advertising. Mixed in with this is the discovery that many of us are buying these expensive products and actually minimizing their effectiveness through improper use. In order to help the health of your hair and to justify the cost, here are ten tips for using your hair products in exactly the right
ways.

Using Too Much Moisturizing Lotion

The main problem with moisturizing lotion is that it’s easy to use too much of the product. Rather than providing a luscious, rich effect, it results in over hydrated, weighed down hair. The perfect amount of the best results is nothing larger than a pea size squeeze rubbed between your palms and applied throughout the head.

Not Enough Spritz

It is very common for someone to limit spritzing their hair with heat protective serum to only two or three times after a towel dry and during a blow dry, flat iron or curl. It is really important to make sure ALL sections of your hair are covered by the spritz before you apply a high degree of heat to it, every time. This will stop it from becoming dry and brittle.

Hair Spray Nozzle is to Close

Holding the nozzle of your hair spray too close to your hair after blow drying it can be really damaging. Applying such a concentrated amount of hair spray to just one spot on your head can lead to becoming crunchy and hard to deal with. The optimum distance at which to spray the product on your hair is roughly twelve inches, allowing for better coverage.

Applying Too Much Shine Enhancer

Many people make the mistake of applying shine enhancer to every part of their hair after a blow-dry. This is not the recommended way to use the product, with manufacturers instead encouraging you to apply the formula to the ends of your hair only; the reason being that your roots are the healthiest part of your head and already have a natural shine.

Applying Curl Definer Too Late

Instead of waiting until after the majority of your hair has been dried by the air to apply curl or wave definer, it is actually recommended that you apply the product to your hair as soon as you have shampooed it. It is the best way to achieve great curls and keep frizz to an absolute minimum.

Only Applying Volumizing Formula to Your Regrowth

Many women tend to apply root lifting creams and formulas only, unsurprisingly, to the area encompassing their roots, but in fact the best way to achieve extra volume with these products is to of course apply to the roots but also to comb through the rest of your hair to achieve more structure and body.

Using Conditioning Spray on the Ends Only

Because many #women see their ends as being the driest part of their hair, they focus only on these when it comes to applying conditioning spray. In actual fact, lightweight conditioning spray is great for all areas of the hair, helping the hydrate it and keep overall frizz to a minimum.

Rubbing in Curling Cream Rather than Twisting

Instead of trying to smooth your frizzy curls by rubbing curling cream in to the top layer of your hair only, it works much better if you take a pea sized amount, rub it in to your palms and work to curl your fingers around your hair so that all areas are given an equal coverage.

Only Using Salt Spray on the Top Layer

To get the absolute best results from a salt spray product, it is recommended that you work it in to all sections of the hair rather than just focusing on the top layer. Use bobby pins to help you get to each layer of your hair so that you can achieve a maximum coverage.

Using Too Much Mousse/Gel

This is something many people are guilty of - using too much hair wax, mouse or gel to the point where the product makes your hair a rock hard, difficult to work with mess. In most situations only a quarter sized squeeze of product will be able to mould your hair in the style that you wish.

Hair styles that reqire no heat

NO HEAT HAIRSTYLES

The easy hairstyles and tips here will enable you to have gorgeous hair every day without the help of a hairdryer, curling iron or flat iron! So why don’t you give your hair a break and try some of these super easy hairstyles right now? These heat-less hairstyles will save your hair and keep it from breaking so much, and they look great!

Crimped Style
Ditch the crimping iron because one of these easy hairstyles is one very popular, totally hot style you can literally achieve overnight! Wash your hair an hour before you’re planning to go to bed, give it about 30 minutes to dry naturally, then braid it into a lot of thin, tight braids. Leave the braids overnight, undo them in the morning, style your hair and voila! This is a great trick if you have oily, curly or straight hair!

Wavy Hair
How easy would it be to get a head full of shiny, perfectly polished waves without a double or triple barrel curing iron? Well, it’s actually pretty easy! Start by shampooing and conditioning your hair. Let your hair dry until it is slightly damp. Use a wide toothed comb to ensure that there are no more tangles. If you have hard to curl hair, rub a little texturizing paste into your hair. Now take a hair tie, twist your hair and put it up in a messy bun. Wait for your hair to dry completely and then slowly take off the hair tie and style as required. Remember, the more hair ties and the more buns you make, the tighter your curls will be.

Wild Curly Hair
Cut an old tee/sheet/pillowcase into long strips (or you could just use socks), then wrap sections of your half dried hair into them by placing the end of each section on the center of the strip and rolling up. Once you’re done, just tie the ends of the strip together and move to the next section. And remember, the smaller your sections are, the tighter your wild curly hair will be.

Natural Loose Curls
Start with dry, clean hair, then slightly wet only the bottom half of your length. Apply styling mousse on the damp part, comb it to distribute the mousse evenly, then put it up in a tightly rolled bun. Allow your hair a couple of hours to dry and form, then let it down and enjoy your natural loose curls! This can work for any type of hair.

Spiral Curls
You don’t need a curling iron to have sexy curls, not when you can get wild spiral curls without heat. The trick to creating spiral curls without using heat is to fold small sections of your wet hair onto your scalp, then pin those loops down using bobby pins. It takes some time and you’ll need to arm yourself with patience but the end result is so amazing that you’ll want to do this all the time. Bonus tip: Do this before you go to bed and secure your loops overnight by sleeping with a shower cap on.

Twisty Hair

This technique is one of the best ways to get big, wild hair overnight! Take tiny sections of hair, apply a generous amount of the styling product of your choice, then twist each section until it starts to coil around its base. Secure these little knots with small silicone bands or bobby pins, let loose after a few hours, and you're instantly rocking some sexy, twisty hair!

Vintage Hair
I know lots of you are in love with vintage hair, which is really having a moment! The good news is that you can create gorgeous curls and waves without any heat whatsoever. You'll need some good foam rollers, some patience, and a love of old Hollywood glam, plus a quality bristle brush won't hurt! Vintage hair looks retro and regal at the office, in the classroom, and definitely out on a romantic date, and since the vintage look is so easy, what's to stop you from trying it?

Cocoon Curls
Looking for those messy, slept in curls? Drop that curler and keep on reading! This technique for bouncy curls requires almost no tools except for your fingers. Beforehand you just need to slightly wet your hair and you are ready to start. The whole process consists of twisting and turning of your hair around itself and your fingers.

Bantu Knot Curls
There is no need to damage your hair and burn your already dried roots to achieve the bombshell curls! Using a curing iron might give great results but completely ruin your hair in the long run. So instead we can resort to bantu knots that are easy and completely harmless. Just grab a handful of hairbands and get going. Take a chunk of your hair, twist it around and then begin twisting it in a bun. Once you are done with it secure the twisted bun with a hair band and continue with the whole head. The next morning you will wake up with sexy bombshell curls!

Deep Curls

One of my favorite ways to achieve deep waves is by using old magazines. It's cheap, easy and it produces perfect results. You just have to make sure to damp your hair slightly so that the curls grab on easier and your hair is able to dry overnight. After that rip pages out of the magazine, fold them in desired length and wrap your hair around it. The only material that you would need besides a magazine is bobby pins, to secure the pages with the hair.

Prominent Waves
Are there several scarfs lying around in your closet? Don't throw them out because you can actually recycle them and use them as curlers! All you need to do is take sections of damp hair and wrap them around the scarf. Once you have completed your whole head, the last thing you need to do is sleep on it. It might cause some discomfort but beauty is pain!

Hair Shampooing

WHY YOU SHOULDN'T SHAMPOO YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY
There are many factors that can go into how many days you can skip shampooing your hair, such as hair type, thickness, and whether or not it is processed in some form or another.

NATURAL OILS
One of the biggest reasons why you shouldn't wash yor hair every day is because of the natural oils on your hair and scalp. While many try so hard to get rid of these oils, the truth is, they are wonderful for your hair. Your natural oils will make your hair healthier and shinier than most products. The thicker your hair is, the more time it takes for these oils to work their way down the strands of your hair, meaning you can go longer between shampooing. Even those with thin hair should be able to go at least every other day without lathering up.

HAIR STYLING
Hair tends to style better the day you don't shampoo your hair. Curls stay in place better, it's easier to brush your hair back into a ponytail or bun, and fly-aways are more easily tamed. This is why many stylist recommend coming into the salon with dirty hair before getting an up-do or any type of special service.

FRESHER COLOR
The less often you can shampoo your hair, the better your color will look. Shampoo's can strip the color from your hair or simply cause it to fade. Since coloring, your hair isn't exactly cheap, it's best to keep up with your investment by skipping shampoo as often as you can.

HAIR APPEARANCE
Not only will your hair style better, your hair will also look better. Everything seems to stay in place better on day 2. You won't be as bothered with frizz or dry looking tresses after skipping the shampoo. If your hair does look greasy at the roots, simply spray with a dry shampoo or add some baby powder.

LESS BUILDUP
Often the greasy look we get in our hair isn't because of our own natural oils, but because of product build up from shampooing and styling. Although your hair may go through an adjustment period when you first start skipping shampooing, you'll begin to notice your hair looking less oily between shampoo's.

LESS HEAT
It's no secret that heat is bad for your hair. Using hair dryers and styling products can cause your hair to break and leave your locks looking lifeless. If you skip the shampoo's, that also means you can skip the blow drying and extra heat on your hair.

Hairstyles without heat

HAIRSTYLES WITHOUT HEAT

The easy hairstyles and tips I’m going to talk about today will enable you to have gorgeous hair every day without the help of a hairdryer, curling iron or flat iron! These heatless hairstyles will save your hair and keep it from breaking so much -- and they look great! Here are a few heatless, effortless hairstyles to help you get started.

FRIZZY CRIMPED STYLE

Wash your hair an hour before you’re planning to go to bed, give it about 30 minutes to dry naturally, then braid it into a lot of thin, tight braids. Leave the braids overnight, undo them in the morning, style your hair and voila! This is a great trick if you have oily, curly or straight hair!

beach WAVY HAIR

How easy would it be to get a head full of shiny, perfectly polished waves without a double or triple barrel curing iron? Well, it’s actually pretty easy, otherwise this surfer girl wavy hair style just wouldn’t be on my list.

Want some more simple hairstyles that don’t require heat or heat protectors? Cut an old t-shirt/sheet/pillowcase into long strips, then wrap sections of your half dried hair into them by placing the end of each section on the center of the strip and rolling up. Once you’re done, just tie the ends of the strip together and move to the next section. And remember, the smaller your sections are, the tighter your wild curly hair will be.

NATURAL LOOSE CURLS

Don’t you just love those romantic, natural loose curls? Well, this easy hairstyle can also be achieved without any heat and here’s exactly how to do it! This can work for any type of hair!

Shedding Hair

how to COpe WITH SEASONAL HAIR SHEDDING

Seasonal hair shedding can be such a nightmare! There are ways to make sure even the most serious of shedding doesn’t bother you that much. You don’t have anything to risk but a few minutes of your time! Take a look at this list of easy cures for hair shedding problems that have been driving you crazy, try them out and start enjoying every season:

BRUSHING MORE OFTEN

Even the ladies with wavy to curly hair have to start working on their relationship with a brush or a comb! I know you think it ruins the curls and makes your hair look like you've stuck your finger in a socket, but it’s the only way to get rid of the dead hairs stuck in the mass of healthy, live ones. Try to comb yours twice, once in the morning and once before bed but you can do it more often if you’d like. In case you’re worried this will mess up your curls, here’s a trick, run wet fingers through your hair once you’re done brushing, or spritz some water, and give your curls about 15-30 minutes to air dry and regroup.

LEAVE YOUR HAIR LOOSE

Take your pick among tons of great styles to help you look your best each day but remember to untie your hair while chilling in the comfort of your own home. Styles that put a lot of stress onto your scalp and roots are not the most ideal choice for all day round wear anyways! And that’s not all, ponytails and buns won’t let the loose hairs fall out naturally, increasing the chances of them getting all tangled with the healthy ones as well as the risk of damaging your hair while trying to detangle and remove dead hairs.

AVOID HEAVY STYLING PRODUCTS

You don’t want dead hairs sticking and tangling with your healthy ones, so the solution is to avoid mousses, hair gels and all the other products that make your hair sticky. We’re not talking about long-term commitment here, of course, just something you may want to think about in those days when your hair seems to shed more than it grows.

EXPERIMENT WITH BANGS

Once the seasonal hair shedding had stopped you’ll probably end up dealing with a lot of baby hairs! Now’s the perfect time to give bangs a go. A stylish full fringe will help you hide that unruly peach fuzz at your hairline. The worst of shedding usually happens in autumn or early spring which means you’ll definitely have enough time to grow out your bangs before the next hot summer!

STYLE IT RIGHT

Speaking about baby hairs, fuzz, frizz and all the post shedding drama, remember what I told you about ditching heavy styling products? Well, you can forget about it at this point! Once all the old hair has fallen out and there’s tons of new frizzies to worry about, you could use all the help a hairspray, gel, pomade and shine serum can provide! Use gels and hair sprays to nail down a perfectly glamorous sleek bun or chignon or opt for a shine serum to help smooth down those tiny fly aways.

AVOID CERTAIN COLORS AND/OR FABRICS

It’s actually quite simple, in the case that your hair is dark, you should probably stick to darker colors and vice versa. It’s not a rule you should follow for months thus limiting your outfit choices, merely a cool trick to help you look your best even in those days when the shedding gets unbearable. Choose your fabrics carefully as well! Rougher or static-y fabrics will prolong your agony and make the loose hairs stick while silkier, softer or less static-prone ones help them roll off undetected.

Hollywood Ombre Highlights make a Nicole Jeffrey's Appearance

Have you seen this new "Ombre"
highlight trend around Hollywood?
This look was originated to recreate a California surfer look. Sun kissed hair with a beautiful natural looking bohemian wave is it's intended style. Ombre is French for shaded. Notice the top of the hair is darker with a subtle shade difference highlighted through the bottom for a very natural feel. This highlight also provides a renewed youth to your hair to restore the days spent in the sun as a child. Normally the "grown out roots look" is not a fashion forward statement. Luckily with the Ombre technique you can blend in with Hollywood's finest.
The technique behind this new highlighting is very unique and leads to beautiful results when executed correctly. Gina, our Joice Educator and Salon Manager has practiced this technique and is spreading the Hollywood statement hair around the Greater Akron area. Get beach babe hair in North East Ohio!

 Don't go overboard with contrast.
The beauty of the Ombre highlight is ruined with incorrect shading.
This should still be a highlighting technique not a defined layered coloring.

Want the bohemian curl too?
Barrel curl styling will do the trick.
Part your hair all the way down the middle to the back. Take little pieces and work your way up to the front wrapping the hair back around the outside of the curling iron. If you choose to invest in a single barrel curler (as pictured) then you will see the best results.
Key to the curl: Make sure your twist the hair into a small rope with your hands before wrapping around the iron for a looser  natural wave.

Back with a Bang! Fall Trends 2011

The season is changing and you might be in the mood for a new cut or color to compliment your new fall fashions. Fringe, lob, and curly bob are  just some of the terminologies being brushed up. Fashion forward hair is softening this season and becoming a more natural gentle look.

Whats a fringe? Fringe or as most of us call them, bangs, have taken a turn to the front from the long running side bang that has been pushed to the sidelines of trendy.

Zooey Deschanel has always been a fabulous fringe supporter.

Mary J Blige, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Mena Suvari
are some of the celebs who are fashionably bring back the bowl cut bangs from the 70's.
This shaping rounds out the face and is very complementing.

Hair styles such as the Lob (long bob) are popular this fall.
Who wouldn't want to look like the stunning Jennifer Aniston?
Beautiful for it's clean look and perfect length for the chilly weather.

The curly bob with is a styling option for long bob wearers, and curly girls. Make sure to add the bangs to make it 2011 trendy! Gina cut and styled this look perfectly on our client who absolutely loved it!

Last but not least lets take a look at some color options. Fall reminds us of the leaves changing and the colors naturally deepening. Browns and reds are in! That does not mean blonde is out, it just means fall is inspiring a darker direction. Some women are just in need of a change in general which could go any direction. Most of our stylists have had it with their hair color and made the change all at once. Beth is blonde again, Marie went red, Louise looked to an ashy brown from her platinum and Valerie darkened and low-lighted too. It's amazing to see the difference a color change can make.

These fearless models made the dramatic change they desired. Leading the way to possibilities this fall. these before and afters from Fashionising

Anything is possible with color, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha poly, Eniko Mihalik, and Lily Cole are just a few examples. If you want to stick with the trends just keep it comfortable, confident, and add some fringe.

Thank you for voting for us on the Beacon's Best, we made it into the top 10! The final announcement will be made on September 26th!

Spirals of a Curly Girl

Have you ever seen straight hair cut curly? No, because that does not make sense. So, why do so many stylists find cutting curly hair straight acceptable? We have no idea but that is exactly why we have made the switch to adopt the Deva hair cutting technique. The owner of Devachan salon in NY has shared all of her secrets to cutting curly girls. We love it! (and so do our clients!)

Deva hair cutting involves reacting to the curls natural placement. Each curl is cut individually just how it fits together in the big picture. The bounce, body and texture of every curl is carefully considered.

Our own Tricia and Gina made the trip to New York specifically to train on this cutting edge technique and they have brought all the Deva skills back to Nicole Jeffrey's salon.

Take a peak at this quick clip on the technique it's self.

Deva cutting would not be complete without it's Deva Curl product line. Starting the routine in the shower is a necessity in order to achieving the healthy, hydrated, maximum curl desired everyday in between cuts. We offer an array of the line's most popular products at Nicole Jeffrey's.

Ask Tricia or Gina which products are best for you and why it is so important to try this line.

Fun Fact: This No-Poo conditioner is absent of sulfur which is a very common ingredient in all detergents that is only good for creating a lather and drying out hair, Yikes! Sulfur free shampoos are offered for all hair types at Nicole Jeffrey's salon to eliminate the harmful effects of sulfur. Getting used to no lather is the hardest part, but worth the change. Straight hair girls, try our Thermafuse product line for smoother, softer hair.
As we mentioned, the method to the curly madness starts at home. The routine involved is quite simple and very important to receiving the ultimate curl for your hair type. The video below includes the steps needed for each hair type so that you can see just how easy it is to care for your curls.

The beautiful results of this technique and product line capture just how excited we are to share it with you. If you are a curly girl, please mention your interest in the Deva cut when scheduling your next appointment. Tell all your curly friends their hair frustrations will vanish and to give it a try.

Call 330-733-0700 to book the difference you deserve today and spiral your way to a new beautiful you.

Be on the look out for next weeks "Face the Facts: Facial Truths" post. Our poor pores need our help!
