Hairdresser Questions

WHAT TO ASK YOUR HAIRDRESSER BEFORE A HAIRCUT

There are some questions your hairdresser will love to answer. Her goal is to help you have the best hair possible. After all, you’re a walking advertisement for her business. Consider some of these questions to ask your hairdresser at your next appointment.

Will this cut work for me?

You can see a haircut on someone and fall in love with it. But you have to remember that it isn’t going to look exactly the same on you. I think this is so easy to forget. Certain cuts favor certain face shapes better than others, as well as certain cuts working better on certain hair types and textures. Your hairdresser is the best person to answer this question for you.

How do I style this cut?
Okay, you’ve found your perfect cut and you’re so excited about it. But there’s a problem. You don’t exactly know how to style it. Ask your hairdresser! She’s the girl with the know-how. You’d be surprised how much of a difference a little bit of instruction can make for your look.

What products should I be using?
Some women are hesitant to ask this question because they’re afraid their hairdresser will lecture them on how they should only use salon products. And while this is possible, it’s not likely. Most hairdressers are happy to point you in the direction of some good products for your hair without sounding condescending.

Will this color work for me?

Before you have your hairdresser take you from brunette to platinum, you might consider asking if it’s the best color choice for you. Being open to her expert opinion can save you months of heartache. You often don’t know how emotionally attached you are to your current hair until you’ve had a hair disaster. If your hairdresser doesn’t think what you’ve got in mind will work then ask her for some suggestions. She may have a color suggestion you’ll love.

Is my hair in good condition?

You handle your hair every day so it can be difficult to tell if it’s in good condition. Damage can happen to your hair slowly, such as the kind that occurs from styling tools. That makes it difficult to notice. It’s good to ask your hairdresser if your hair’s healthy. If it isn’t, she can offer you some suggestions on what to do about it.

What hair tools do I use to style my hair with?

Do you love how your hair looks when you leave the salon? It may have a lot to do with the hair tools your hairdresser uses. Ask her what she’s using to style your hair. She’ll probably be happy to share the information with you. The right hair tools can make a huge difference in your hair.

Do you have any other tips for me?

It’s good to leave the door open for your hairdresser to give you any other advice she feels is helpful. There may be something she’s hesitant to mention but could really be helpful to you. Asking her this question can give her the encouragement to share with you. Get all the helpful information you can from your hairdresser. It can help you look your best.

Keeping your hair healthy while being pregnant!

KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY DURING YOUR PREGNANCY
Do you need to know some of the ways to keep your hair healthy when you're pregnant? Your hair may be in great condition, as the pregnancy hormones mean that you're not shedding as you normally would. Some women find that their hair is more difficult during pregnancy though.

Diet

The main reason why it's important to eat well during pregnancy is for the health of your baby, but a good diet will also benefit your hair. Feeding your growing child takes a lot out of your body, and your hair will be of secondary importance. So make sure that you eat a healthy diet. Eat whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and lean protein, and avoid comfort eating.

Conditioning

You may find that your hair is drier than normal. If this happens, give it a weekly conditioning treatment.  If necessary, switch your shampoo to one that is more moisturizing as well as giving your hair this conditioning treatment.

Hair Breakage

You may find that your hair is prone to breakage during your pregnancy. Again, this is because of the hormonal changes occurring in your body. It can be overdone by heat, so let your hair dry naturally or use a low setting on your dryer. Use a deep conditioner and get your hair trimmed regularly to help keep your hair healthy.

Prepare for Shedding

The downside of not losing hairs during the pregnancy is that you'll lose them a few months after the baby is born. So be prepared for this to happen. It can seem as though you're losing far too much, but that's simply because your hair is catching up with its normal growth cycle.

Hair can be really funny during pregnancy. You may even find that your normally straight hair becomes curly when you're pregnant, or the opposite.

Giving Fine Hair Volume

HOW TO GIVE YOUR FINE HAIR MORE VOLUME
When you have fine hair, you are constantly on the lookout for ways to add volume. You can’t change the thickness or texture of your hair, but you can do the best you can with what you have. These are some ways to make the most of your fine hair.

right shampoo & conditioner

One of the best ways to pump up fine hair is to start with the right shampoo and conditioner. When you are shopping for shampoo and conditioner, choose a formula that is formulated to add body or volume to your hair. These shampoos and conditioners are formulated to not weigh your hair down and be a light product. You especially want to avoid anything that says it will moisturize your hair. Products that moisturize your hair will weigh it down. Try out our Volume shampoo by Joico!

ROOT LIFTER

If you have fine hair, root lifter will make a lot of difference in styling your hair. Try our root lifter by Joico, or our Aquage. Apply root lifter when your hair is damp and blow dry immediately for the magic to happen.

UPSIDE DOWN Blowdry

You need to dry in the direction you want your hair to go. When you have fine hair that you are trying to add volume to, you want your hair to go farther away from your head and blow drying your hair upside down is drying it away from your scalp to add volume. Another option is to hold your hair up and away from your face while you dry it. Either way will give you the desired result.

BIOTIN

Biotin is known for making your hair grow faster and make it thicker. While you can’t ever change the texture of your fine hair, you can take Biotin which really pumps up the volume. Of course, you should always talk to your physician before taking any new supplement.

SHORTER CUT

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is embrace what you have and choose a cut and style that works best with your hair. Shorter cuts will make your hair appear fuller and thicker.

BACKCOMB

Backcombing or teasing can be very beneficial in pumping up the volume of your hair when done correctly. What you want to do is raise a section of your hair up and tease under it and then put the smooth section down on top of it. This strategy usually works best when used at the crown of the head.

 Free day

Fine hair is more fragile than other hair types and you need to treat it gently to avoid the breakage that makes it look even finer. I have learned that one of the best ways to do this is to give your hair the day off when you can. Skip washing your hair or styling it with any styling tools the day you are giving your hair the day off. If your hair gets oily when you skip washing it, try adding some dry shampoo to get you through.

Short Cuts for the Summer!

SHORT STYLES YOU WILL HAVE TO TRY TO COOL YOU DOWN THIS SUMMER!
Summer is here, so how about doing some short styles and trying something new!

PIXIE

I like to think that the pixie cut is a great option when it comes to short hairstyles for summer because it looks very cute and feminine. Not to mention, it’s so easy to maintain if you are plagued with thick curly hair, and you will definitely stay cool in the heat this summer.

BOB

Even if you opt out of bangs, a bob can still look stunning on any woman, and I have to say that it is one of my favorite short hairstyles for summer. I love the bob because I think it can be so great when styled the right way, and you don’t have to go through the whole ordeal of cutting off all of your hair, which can definitely be too traumatic for some people.

GIRLY MOHAWK

So before you make a judgment, hear me out: a girly mohawk comes in all shapes and styles. I like the girly mohawk as one of the short hairstyles for summer because it’s daring, sexy and you really only live once, so why not try something different? Everyone has different tastes, but a girly mohawk can be really flattering on some people. I think it’s a great option if you want to add some style in a short haircut as opposed to the alternatives which can seem lifeless and flat, especially if you have very straight, thin hair.

GAMINE

This is a great option when it comes to short hairstyles for summer simply because it’s one of the most practical, but still fashionable and sexy. I think, despite popular belief, that there are many different things you can do with a gamine style haircut, one of them being wearing a headband or pinning back the front bangs with a bobby pin or bow. Plus, it will keep you cool in the unbearable heat of summer!

CROPPED

The difference between the cropped hairstyle and the pixie is that the cropped style is longer on the sides and back, so it isn’t quite a pixie or bob, but it’s sort of in between. I also love a cropped haircut as one of the short hairstyles for summer because it isn’t quite as dramatic as a gamine or pixie but it’s definitely short enough to keep you cool in the summer sun. I’ve seen a lot of older women with this hairstyle but I don’t see why younger women can’t also wear it.

UNDERCUT

Living in New York, I have seen many women and men take on the undercut hairstyle. I think some people attribute this style to the so-called “hipster” movement but it’s still of one the best short hairstyles for summer. Here’s why: if you aren’t ready to essentially shave off all your hair and go gamine, but you really want to keep your hair as short as possible to avoid the heat this summer, the undercut is a great compromise. The undercut is pretty much self-explanatory in some sense; basically, the hair is cut from underneath but it gets covered from hair on the top. Even if you don’t really consider yourself a hipster, or punk, or whatever label you want to include, the undercut is definitely in fashion right now. You can even keep your hair longer on the top and only undercut it on one side if you want to.

REVERSE MULLET

A reverse mullet is ideal as one of the short hairstyles for summer, because your hair is almost completely off your neck but you still have some length in the front. At first glance, most people don’t even realize that the back part of your hair is shorter than the front. Overall it’s a very chic and sexy option to beat the summer heat without completely cutting off all of your hair.

2013 Summer Hair Styles

2013 SUMMER HAIR STYLES
Instead of your usual ponytail to keep your hair up, how about sporting some new ways to wear your hair this summer? Whether your hair is short or long, there are some fresh new ideas for hairstyles that will please everyone.

THE MERMAID

The mermaid has luscious, flowing waves like a mermaid’s hair and is braided at the top around the sides for a little elegant, yet youthful twist. This would be a great poolside hairstyle next to that new swimsuit you’ll be wearing this summer!

KNOTS AND TWISTS

If you want an updo that isn’t too fancy but still gives you some style, choose a twist or braided knot. This works for medium-long length hairstyles and can be very helpful for keeping those locks off your shoulders to keep you nice and cool this year.

SOFT AND SWEET CURLS

Bangs are back, and so are soft, sweet curls. How about combining the two in this creative hairstyle? Curls that are soft and not too harsh are perfect for short, medium or long hairstyles. To get this look, use hot rollers instead of curling irons, a sleek hair balm, and ask your hair stylist to give you longer, blunter bangs if you want to try adding bangs.

THE BOHO BRAID

The Bohemian (Boho) trend is hot right now, and especially in the world of summer hairstyles. To get this look, let your hair air dry to give it a wavy, loose look, create two braids from each side of your hair in alignment with your forehead, and join them at the back of your crown so they meet in the middle. This look is really popular with celebrities right now and could be done with any length of hair.

SOFT AND SWEET BUN

Twisting your hair into a soft, silky bun at the top of your head is perfect for a casual or more elegant outing. If you want to add some style, try adding in a bandanna  headband or scarf. I love this look for days by the pool when I still want my hair to look pretty without it getting in the way!

SHORT AND SHAGGY

Maybe you don’t even want to think about your hair this summer and want to cut it off, or maybe you have short hair and just need to add a little flair to your hair. This short and shaggy look would be perfect to keep your hair out of your way and still add a little style to your locks. I think this look would be super-cute with any hair color and would be awesome for those hot days of summer when you don’t want to mess with your hair.

THE LONG BOB

If you’re thinking of trying a new hairstyle or a new hair cut this summer, try the long bob! Add in a few highlights and you’ve got yourself one trendy hairstyle. This would be easy to maintain and would look great for casual outings or more formal ones. If you’ve got the guts to cut your hair, go for this look, which still gives you some length, but is also short enough to be low-maintenance and keep your hair off your back.

How to strengthen your hair

how TO STRENGTHEN YOUR HAIR

We all want strong, shiny, healthy hair, but unfortunately the stresses and strains of daily modern life tend to make it difficult. A busy schedule often mean our locks don't get the attention they deserve. Between the outdoors and the indoors, our hair tends to become neglected, weak, fragile and brittle. If your strands are feeling a little on the worse side, and you’d like to see their natural shine restored, these helpful tips will help guide you in the right direction.

PROTEIN

It is important to understand that weak hair needs special attention. If yours is feeling a little brittle and lifeless, you’ll need to get yourself a specially designed set of shampoo and conditioner. Opt for something that is protein enriched: this will help your hair to rebuild it's strength you long for. We offer a great variety of shampoo's and conditioners at the salon. Ask about our Joico k-pak line to get you started!

MOISTURe

Dull, fragile hair is often left looking lifeless because it is dehydrated. Very dry hair is prone to breakage in ways that healthy, nourished locks are not, and so it’s important that you give yours the moisture that it needs. Apply an intense conditioning hair mask about once every week, or twice in times of real hair crisis, and consider a leave in re-hydrating treatment as well.

less heat

Beware of taking very hot showers. Exposing your locks to high temperatures can actually contribute to weakening. Make sure your water temperature is sitting somewhere around the pleasantly warm mark, and never let it go all the way up to scalding hot. We also encourage less heat when you use your blow dryer  if you have a medium setting use that before the high heat, or just simply air dry your hair.

diet

Your diet is such an important factor when it comes to re-conditioning weak and lifeless hair. Make sure you are getting all the correct vitamins and minerals by adding a multivitamin to your daily diet regime, or by increasing your intake of foods rich in protein and iron, and those full of calcium as well.

PROTECT

Curling irons, blow dryers and ceramic hair straighteners have become tools in our everyday beauty arsenals, and, as we know by now, they also contribute significantly to weakening our locks. In order to avoid dehydration and the breakage that results from it, it is crucial that you apply a defensive product before you get on with using the heat from one of those tools. This will help to seal in moisture, and will guard against the weakening effect of exposure to high temperatures as well.

GET RID OF SPLIT ENDS

Split ends occur when hair is especially dry and fragile at the tips and they pose a real threat to the rest of your locks as well. Split ends can ‘grow’ up the length of the hair, so that eventually almost the entire strand is cut in two. It goes without saying that this contributes significantly to weakening, and so, in order to keep your locks strong, it’s important that you trim about every six weeks or so.

DETANGLER

While this is perhaps not so much a means by which to strengthen hair as a strategy to avoid excessive breakage, it is very important to consider. Especially if your hair is a little on the fragile side, you don’t want to be dragging a brush or comb through them; instead, get yourself a good quality detangling spray and use it to help you to brush without breakage.

SPF

We often forget that our hair, when it is exposed to UV rays, suffers significantly from sun damage. In order to protect your locks from this kind of inevitable wear and tear, it’s a good idea to invest in an SPF enriched product for your hair.
We offer a great 4 step conditions treatment at the salon as well! Call 330-733-0700 to set up your appointment today, before the heat from your house sucks all the moisture away from your strands.

Fixes for Thinning Hair

WAYS TO HIDE THINNING HAIR

There are plenty of ways to hide thinning hair.  Now, I’m sure you know wigs, weaves and extensions are all cool ways for disguising thinning hair but, there are plenty of other things you can try. Whether your thinning problem is reversible or a result of genetics and/or age, there is a way to add hair volume without having to pay top dollar for hairpieces! Interesting, right? Well, check out these following suggestions:

change

Darker shades of hair makes thinning more noticeable, which is why hairdressers usually advise a hair color change! Simply go a shade or two (maybe even three if you’re brave) lighter and those areas where your scalp used to kind of peek through won’t be as noticeable as before.

LAYER IT

Disguising thinning hair or giving the illusion of volume to thin hair can be achieved with tons of layers! Ask your stylist to cut a few more layers, style them then explain how to achieve the same result at home. Have them suggest a few products and styling techniques for you to use on daily basis.

VOLUMIZE!

Although it gives great results, teasing as a popular volume-boosting method probably isn’t what you want to be doing day, after day! No need to risk further thinning, breakage and damage. Why not experiment with other ways to add hair volume such as thickening hair care and styling products? Thickening shampoo and conditioner will work wonders on their own, giving you the illusion of at least 20% thicker hair. But, you can also follow up with a root booster, volumizing mousse or powder and crank that volume up even more.

ACESSORIZE

But what if your thinning hair isn’t a result of age or genetics, but a completely reversible damage your hair had sustained through your wig or extension wearing habit or chemical treatments? Well, time to give your hair a break, there are ways to hide thinning hair and look absolutely gorgeous in the process! Fold your favorite scarf into a headband or invest (and maybe even design) a few elasticized, quick-slip ones to have on the go and you’ll have a trendy interesting look to experiment with while growing out your edges.
COLOR
Scalp colors are another interesting, highly effective way to hide thinning hair and make those critical patched areas less noticeable. Don’t give up your beloved hair color – get a matching spray-on color instead and achieve that head full of hair at home! You will have to experiment a bit to find the product that works best for you, but once you discover that perfect, non-sticky, non-transferable, long lasting formula, obtaining a flawless hairstyle will be a piece of cake!
be CREATIVE
Speaking about ways to hide thinning hair – here’s a tip that never gets old! Part your hair differently and experiment with hairstyles that can help make those critical areas less noticeable. And with so many hair accessories you can use… who’s to say you won’t even enjoy your new and improved styling habits!
KERATIN PROTEIN FIBErs
Look for a product containing keratin protein fibers! This product basically looks like a powder, but actually contains special protein fibers that attach themselves to your hair making it look thicker, fuller and more voluminous! And crazy as it may sound – this revolutionary product really works magic and, unlike scalp color sprays, won’t run in humid weather!

Keeping Your Hair Healthy

7 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HAIR LOOK HEALTHIER

You can significantly improve the quality of your hair by following some simple rules during the everyday care for your hair. Here are 7 ways to make your hair look healthier.

1. EAT WELL

Your diet plays a major role in how your hair turns out. If you are eating nutritious food filled with all the required vitamins and supplements, it will show in your hair. Any food that gives you vitamins A and C is great as these vitamins help the body to produce a natural conditioner called sebum.

2. AIR DRY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN
In today’s world we are constantly inflicting a vast amount of heat onto our hair. We blow dry it and follow this with straightening and curling iron treatments. All this heat can really damage the hair so when you can, allow your hair to air dry. Protecting your hair from excessive amounts of heat can make it look healthy and shiny almost immediately.

3. GET A HEAD MASSAGE

It is a scientific fact that a good head massage can do wonders for your hair. It stimulates blood flow and reduces thinning and hair loss. You can do it yourself at home either with your hands or with the help of a massage brush. Also embrace those amazing scalp massages at the shampoo bowl from our lovely hair dressers!

4. REGULARLY WASH YOUR HAIR BUT DON’T OVER WASH IT

Washing your hair keeps it clean and fresh. It takes away the dust and grease that gets retained within as you go about your daily lives. However take care not to over wash your hair. Shampoo takes out a lot of your hair’s natural oils so when you over do it, you unnecessarily lose out on its natural shine.  We suggest every 2-3 days in between shampoos.

5. TRIM YOUR HAIR REGULARLY

A regular trim works wonders for your appearance. It gets rid of those ugly split ends. It also makes your hair look lush and healthy. You also have the opportunity to change your hairstyle a bit every time you go for a trim. It can really enhance your look and free you from your boredom.

6. TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR GENTLY

When you get out of the shower try to gently pat your hair down. You run the risk of damaging it when you roughly go over it with a towel. When hair is wet, it expands making it easier to snap. Drying your hair vigorously with a towel can only result in long-lasting damage.

7. BRUSH YOUR HAIR BEFORE SLEEPING

Brushing your hair before bed actually does make your hair look healthier and well kept. It gets rid of any dirt and particles that found their way within and also promotes circulation.
Regular care for your hair is a daily exercise consisting of a healthy diet, smart hair care techniques and avoidance of heat. Start today for a healthier head of hair tomorrow. Talk with your hairdresser if you have any further questions or concerns.  We are always willing to give good advice when it comes to the well being of your hair.
